The Rainbow Room Series

This year, the Main Stage at Wilmington’s historic 150-year-old Thalian Hall takes a much-deserved respite for repair, renovation and significant technical & audience-comfort upgrades. But come September, audiences for its popular Main Attractions series are invited to make their way up to the second floor for a season of exciting new club-styled events in Thalian Hall’s own “Rainbow Room.”

Like its fabled namesake, Thalian Hall’s new Rainbow Room will welcome a line-up of unparalleled performing artists in a candlelit, intimate nightclub setting. Guests will be ushered to comfortable table seating, offered fine wines and great service – and find themselves only feet away from national and international artists who continue the tradition of quality that has made historic Thalian Hall one of the southeast’s most distinctive live performance venue destinations.

One weekend monthly from September 2009 through May 2010, Thalian Hall’s Rainbow Room will feature a four-performance schedule, seating approx. 100-125 guests per set. Showtimes are conveniently synced to encourage patrons to enjoy a lovely dinner or brunch in nearby restaurants before or after the shows...

Take a look – you’ll be surprised at who’s coming to town! While the lights may be going down temporarily for some nips and tucks on the first floor at historic Thalian Hall –the lights are definitely coming up in its new Rainbow Room upstairs. Your table’s waiting...right this way.

All performances Fridays-thru-Sundays; advance-paid reservations strongly recommended; 8:30 PM Fri.; 7:30 & 9:30 PM Sat.; 2:30 Sun. matinee.

The Maid

The gulf between the upstairs and downstairs lives of servants and their employers has never been more intriguingly and psychologically explored than in The Maid. Forty-one year old Raquel has worked for the Valdez family for 23 years. They depend on her for succor and support as she maintains the household but she is slowly showing signs of strain and the concerned family hires another maid to assist her. The delicate household balance is changed and Raquel responds unexpectedly. Thanks to the subtle performance of Catalina Saavedra, Raquel is revealed to us slowly as we come to understand her complexity and depth. Director Sebastián Silva’s comic diversions provide viewer relief while sustaining the film’s tension. Starring Catalina Saavedra, Claudia Celedón, Mariana Loyola and Alejandro Garcia-Huidobro.

95 minutes. Not rated by the MPAA. In Spanish with English subtitles.
